Surrounded by the Tuscan countryside that looks like a postcard, it is considered one of the most beautiful abbeys in Italy
Immersed in the green Tuscan countryside, not far from the center of Pienza, lies the beautiful abbey of Sant’Antimo, a top-level historical attraction.
The Abbey of Sant’Antimo, stories of faith and culture
The Abbey stands in the center of a valley just below the town of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, and is a sacred building to visit as it is one of the most important examples of 13th century monastic architecture and certainly the most important Romanesque monument in southern Tuscany .
Until the 14th century, the abbey held functions of notable importance, becoming a fundamental not only spiritual, but also economic and cultural center
In fact, the signs of its ancient function are still evident today, clearly visible in the architectural forms, which have evident French influences, and in the refinement of the decorations that bring out a great attention to detail.
The lateral bell tower is also beautiful and imposing, already visible before arriving near the abbey itself
The Abbey of Sant’Antimo today
Currently the Abbey of Sant’Antimo is also one of the places not to be missed during a tour of the Val d’Orcia, of which it is one of the major historical monuments of all. In fact, every year there are many visitors who arrive here to visit it, and who over time have opened it to tourist flows that are no longer linked only to spiritual tourism and pilgrimages.
Despite this, the Abbey of Sant’Antimo still maintains its religious function intact as it houses a community of Premonstratensian Canons Regular.
A curiosity: this origin is also known as the White Canons, from the color of the clothes they wear.
