Siena
A full day excursion to the Tuscan hill-town of Siena which is self-contained behind its medieval walls. This town was first settled in the time of Etruscans c. 900 BC to 400 BC. Sienas greatest attraction is its cityscape which can be enjoyed without visiting one museum. The heart of the city is the Piazza del Campo which is known for hosting the Palio horse race. Enjoy the day by exploring the winding medieval streets and neighborhoods of this beautiful town. Is the principal public space of Siena and is one of Europes greatest medieval squares. The shell-shaped town square houses the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia and is where the thrilling bareback horse race the Palio occurs twice a year.
San Gimignano
The tour will continue with San Gimignano, famed for its medieval skyscrapers, high walls and narrow streets that perfectly match what most peoples imagine of a Tuscan hill-town to be like. Learn about the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict and commercial interests that forced the local rich families to build their towers, as well as what brought fortune and bankruptcy to this town that despite the small size is one of the most visited and unique sights of Italy. During the day you will also stop in Monteriggioni, a small jewel of our region. This is a walled medieval fortress that sits on top of a hill surrounded by the picturesque Tuscan countryside. Its medieval walls and fourteen towers are still intact.
